Asking whether WAV or MP3 is “best for podcasts” mixes two jobs together. Production needs a durable, editable master. Distribution needs a file that downloads quickly and works reliably in podcast apps. WAV excels at the first; MP3 excels at the second.

The recommended podcast workflow
- Record WAV at the project’s native sample rate, commonly 44.1 or 48 kHz, and preferably 24-bit when your recorder supports it.
- Edit without lossy exports. Keep dialogue cleanup, music, fades and loudness processing inside the session.
- Save a lossless master. WAV is convenient; FLAC reduces storage without discarding samples.
- Create one distribution encode. Export MP3 or AAC only after the episode is final.
- Listen after encoding. Check sibilance, music transitions and the loudest segment.
What bitrate should a podcast use?
Apple’s current RSS guidance accepts MP3 or AAC. At 44.1 or 48 kHz, it lists 64–128 kbps for mono and 128–256 kbps for stereo, and notes that AAC can deliver better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate.
For a clean spoken-word MP3, 80–96 kbps mono is a practical starting point. Use 128 kbps mono when the voice contains music, field recordings or demanding sound design. For stereo, begin around 128–160 kbps and increase if complex music sounds rough.
Mono or stereo?
Mono is not a downgrade when the content is one or two centered voices. It gives speech a larger effective bit budget and reduces file size. Choose stereo for binaural recording, musical shows, fictional soundscapes or interviews whose spatial placement matters.
Loudness and peaks
Codec choice cannot fix inconsistent mixing. Apple recommends an overall program loudness around -16 dB LKFS, within one decibel, and a true-peak ceiling no higher than -1 dBFS. Treat that as a delivery target, not a reason to crush natural dynamics. Remove distracting peaks and level speakers before final limiting.
When should you publish WAV?
A platform may accept WAV, but that does not automatically make it the best listener download. A one-hour stereo WAV can exceed 600 MB, while a 128 kbps compressed file is roughly 58 MB. Use WAV when a producer, network or distribution service explicitly wants a master—not simply because it sounds more professional.
