The iPhone can play several common audio formats, so the “best” choice depends on what the file must do. A song synced to your phone, a master recording and an attachment sent to mixed devices should not necessarily use the same codec.

AAC/M4A: the everyday default

AAC is a compressed audio codec; M4A is a common filename/container used to hold it. It usually delivers strong quality at a smaller bitrate than an older MP3 encode and works naturally in Apple’s playback ecosystem. For a portable library, 192–256 kbps AAC is a sensible high-quality range.

MP3: the compatibility choice

MP3 remains useful when files leave your phone. Car stereos, web tools, inexpensive players and non-Apple devices nearly always recognize it. Use 256 kbps for a practical music copy or 320 kbps when MP3 is mandatory and storage is secondary.

ALAC and FLAC: lossless choices

Apple Music’s lossless catalog uses ALAC, covering quality from 16-bit/44.1 kHz through high-resolution material. FLAC is also a legitimate open lossless format supported in modern Apple playback contexts. Neither format improves a lossy source; choose them when the original is genuinely lossless.

ALAC is convenient for an Apple-first collection. FLAC is attractive when the same archive serves Windows, Android, servers and specialist players. You can convert between ALAC and FLAC without changing the decoded audio if sample rate, bit depth and channels remain the same.

A note about Bluetooth headphones

Storing a lossless file does not guarantee a lossless wireless path. Apple notes that AirPods and many wireless Beats products use the AAC Bluetooth codec and that Bluetooth connections are not lossless. Lossless files still provide a clean source, but wired listening and, for sample rates above 48 kHz, appropriate external hardware may be needed.

WAV is useful, but rarely ideal for a phone library

WAV is excellent for recording exchange and editing, but its large size makes it inefficient for thousands of songs. Convert the production master to ALAC or FLAC for lossless storage, or AAC for portable listening, while preserving the original project.
